Valentine’s Cake Balls Ingredients

20 cake pop sticks

1 box cake mix

For the frosting:

1/2 cup softened butter

2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

2 tablespoons heavy cream

For the chocolate coating

4 x Venchi white chocolate bar

Yields: 20 cake pops

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Directions

To make the frosting

  1. In a bowl, whisk the softened butter with the powdered sugar.

  1. Mix in the vanilla essence until well combined.

  1. Add the cream to thicken the frosting.

  1. Continue to mix until the frosting makes a stiff peak with a curl on the top.

  1. When frosting is creamy and thick, it's done.

To make the cake filling

  1. Let the baked cake cool.

  1. Place in a bowl and finely crumble the cooled cake with your hands.

  1. Mix in the frosting. Make sure it's combined well. You can use a spoon or hand mixer.

  1. The cake should hold together and not be too crumbly. Add more cake if the mixture becomes too moist. Or add more frosting if the mixture is too dry.

  1. With your hands, roll out about 20 ball shapes. You can use a cookie scoop to form perfect balls. Use up all the mixture.

  1. Put parchment paper on a plate or pan. Place the cake balls onto the paper. Then put them in the freezer for 15 minutes.

To make the chocolate frosting

  1. Bring a pot of water to boiling, then lower it to a soft simmer.

  1. In a bowl, break up the chocolate into pieces. Make sure the bowl fits snugly on top of the pot of water without any chance of steam getting into the chocolate. Also, don't let the bottom of the bowl touch the water.

  1. On top of the simmering water, put the bowl with the chocolate.

  1. Whisk frequently until the chocolate is smooth and melted.

  1. Once the chocolate's melted, remove the bowl from the water.

Assemble the cake pops

  1. Take your cake balls out of the refrigerator.

  1. Pour the melted chocolate into a deep cup or bowl to make coating the cake pop easy.

  1. Push the cake pop stick into the cake balls.

  1. Then dip the cake pop into the melted chocolate. Make sure it's coated completely.

  1. Twirl the cake pop to remove any excess chocolate and create a smooth finish.

  1. Add sprinkles before the chocolate dries.

  1. Place the finished cake pop on the parchment paper.

  1. Repeat until all cake pops have a stick and are coated with melted chocolate.

  1. It will take about 1 hour for the chocolate coating to set.

  1. Serve and enjoy!

Valentine’s Cake Pops: ideas to decorate them

We eat first with our eyes, so unleash the imagination when decorating your Valentine's cake pops. Luckily, decorating is almost as much fun as eating. For the best results, make sure the cake pops are chilled. Only work on a handful at a time, and leave the ones you're not decorating in the freezer.

Venchi's recipe features a white chocolate coating in keeping with the Valentine's Day theme, but feel free to experiment. Here are a few ideas:

  • You could add a few drops of red food dye into the chocolate frosting for pretty pink cake pops. Here's how to color chocolate perfectly.

  • Sprinkle the chocolate coating with pink or red sprinkles.

  • Cover the cake pop with dried rose petals and create swoon-worthy Valentine's desserts.

  • With a fork, drizzle even more melted chocolate on the coating. It'll create adorable stripes on the outside of the cake pop.

  • Crush a white chocolate bar. While the cake pop's coating is still wet, coat it with crushed chocolate.

  • Use a stand or create a DIY one from styrofoam to create a cake pop bouquet. It's a stunning gift for your loved ones that's guaranteed to show them how much you care.
